The definition of Qur’an:
1- Linguistic meaning: The Arabic word (Qur’an) is derived from the root (qara’a) which has various meanings, such as: to read, to recite.
Qur’an is a verbal noun and hence means the “reading” or “recitation”. As used in the Qur’an itself, the word refers to the revelation from Allah (swt) in the broad sense and is not always restricted to the written form in the shape of a book,as we have it before us today
Allah (swt) said: "وننزل من القرآن ما هو شفاء ورحمة للمؤمنين ولا يزيد الظالمين إلا خسارا"
“And We send down of the Qur’an that which is a healing and mercy to those who believe, and it increases the wrong doing nothing but loss” (17:82)
2-The technical meaning:
القرآن: هو كلام الله تعالى، المنزل على رسول الله محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم باللفظ العربي، المنقول إلينا بالتواتر
1- Qur`an: Is the book, which Allah (swt) revealed in His speech to His Prophet
Muhammad (saw) in Arabic and this has been transmitted to us by
continuous testimony or tawatur.
2-Qur`an: Is the book containing the speech of Allah (swt), revealed to Prophet
Muhammad (saw) in Arabic and transmitted to us by continuous testimony,
or tawatur.
3- Qur’an: Is the speech of Allah sent down upon the last prophet Muhammad (saw) through the Angel Gabriel, in its precise meaning and precise wording, transmitted to us by numerous persons (tawatur), both verbally and in writing.
The speech of Allah: means Allah’s exact words, nothing of its words is others, it is not the words of Gabriel (saw) or Muhammad (saw), they are just the conveyers of it. It is Allah’s words on their tongues.
Revealed to Prophet Muhammad (saw): It distinguishes what was reveled to Prophet Muhammad (saw) from other revelation before him, like the Torah which was revealed to prophet Moses(saw), the Bible to prophet Jesus(saw), the Psalms which was revealed to David (saw) and the Books of Ibrahim(saw).
Q- Were all the words of Allah revealed to the prophet Muhammad (saw)?
A- No not all Allah’s Almighty Words were revealed; rather the revealed words are but a few of too many. Allah (swt) said: "قل لو كان البحر مدادًا لكلمات ربى لنفد البحر قبل أن تنفد كلمات ربى ولو جئنا بمثله مددا"
“ Say (O Muhammad(saw) to mankind): If the sea were ink for (writing) the words of my Lord, surely, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord would be finished, even if We brought (another sea) like it for its aid”(18:109)
Allah (swt) also said:”"ولو أنما في الأرض من شجرة أقلام والبحر يمده من بعده سبعة أبحر ما نفدت كلمات الله إن الله عزيز حكيم"
And if all the trees on the earth were pens and the sea (were ink wherewith to
write), with seven seas behind it to add to its (supply), yet the Words of Allah would
not be exhausted. Verily Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise” (31:27)
Transmitted to us by continuous testimony or tawatur: Means reported by large number of people whose agreement upon a lie is inconceivable.
The Qur`an is the proof of the prophecy of Muhammad (saw), the most authoritative guide for the Muslims, and the first source of Shar`iah.
Ulama are in agreement that the entire text of the Qur`an is "Mutawatir", i.e. its authenticity
is proven by universally accepted testimony.
