you can speak about synchronic versus diachronic study to linguistics
you have to mention in synchronic desaussure and his work and in the diachronic : you 'll start with boas , bloomfield, ........sapir and warf till chomskyand you have to concentrate on the work of bloomfield and chomsky
an other idea is to compare chomsky and bloomfield; it is true that they are both descriptivists and looked to the study of language with a synchronic point of view but there is a difference in their views towards landuage.
